Current Design Trends – 2012

Grey & Yellow

We’ve ALL seen it.  Grey and yellow has exploded on the seen.  In fact, it’s been here for over 2 years and just keep growing in popularity.  It first started in the fashion industry and crept over to the home furnishings side of design.  It’s a fun color pallet and so many have gotten in on this craze.  Perhaps one of its cutest applications is used in a nursery.  It’s the perfect way to keep it gender neutral (if you’re not certain of what you’re having), stylish, and not-so-baby (aka you won’t have to change it when the child gets a few years on them).  Let’s take a peak at a few baby’s rooms that exemplify this subtle and sweet color scheme:

Chevron

If you had to sum up the current print craze – it would be chevron.  This zigzag phenomenon comes in all colors and sizes.  It can be seen nearly everywhere from shirts, scarves, pillows, wallpaper, area rugs, bedding, etc.  We love it as a simple statement wall in a space or an accent pillow on ones sofa.  Because of its big geometric impact, a little goes a long way.  Let’s look at a few fun ways to participate in this trend, shall we?

Industrial Chic

Everything from bare boned lighting to pallet style coffee tables and bookcases, this style took off in a big way!  Never would you have thought that something so simple and ‘rustic’ would be so cool, right?  We love this look when it comes to an office, playroom, or other spaces that get a lot of wear and tear.  You can’t bruise it and accidentally mess it up – it’s virtually indestructible!  Let’s look at a few examples of this hit style craze:

As always, we suggest using these trends sparingly.  They’re called trends for a reason.  Be true to yourself and indulge in the trends on a small scale.  Don’t spend your hard earned money on things you don’t really love or won’t be the “it thing” for long.

I must be pretty trendy because I have used all these trends in my house. Gray & Yellow nursery… check! Chevron… check! Industrial Chic… Oh yeah! But it’s so true about using these sparingly. I love a pop of chevron here in there, but not a whole room or everything chevron. It’s too much.
